India is planning major changes to their T20I team. Shreyas Iyer will be replacing Suryakumar Yadav as captain for the T20I series in Ireland and England. This change is intended to reshape the team for the 2028 T20 World Cup. Iyer’s captaincy will coincide with cricket being reintroduced to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The first post-T20 World Cup squad will be announced on Saturday, and it will be the first T20I series following the World Cup that Yadav will not be captain of.

Suryakumar’s Future is Uncertain
Yadav’s recent T20I performances risk jeopardizing his changing role and recent success. He has been internationally active for the World Cup but only managed to score 242 runs from 9 innings. His performance was lackluster overall, and the score is still relatively low, especially considering his role as an attacking T20 batter.
Pick a young, energetic team. This is the age group that the selectors want to mold India with for the 2028 World Cup and beyond. The drastic decisions will continue, as it is rumored that Yadav will be dropped from the entire series, away from home and against England.
Shreyas Iyer Seemingly Strong Choice
Shreyas Iyer is expected to become the leader of India’s T20I cricket team. While he hasn’t played T20Is since December of 2023, he has been performing in league cricket, and he has been given leadership opportunities.
Iyer has been posting good numbers in IPL over the last few seasons. In IPL 2025, he scored 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07, and in the next season, Iyer had 498 runs at a strike rate of 168.81.
Iyer has been given leadership opportunities and for good reason. Iyer brought the Kolkata Knight Riders their 2024 championship and has brought both the Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the finals in 2020 and 2025, respectively.
Why Iyer Has Not Been in India’s T20I Cricket
Iyer has not been in India’s T20I cricket for a few years now, but it has not been due to bad performance. India has had other players such as Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma, who play in the same position as Iyer and present a challenge to Iyer in terms of selection, for a block of time as well.
Iyer’s last interaction with the T20I team was earlier this year as he was named as a replacement for an injured player in the series against New Zealand taking place in India. He was also not given a chance to play as the team wanted to stay in line with the players they selected for the T20 World Cup.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, A 15-Year-Old Cricket Star, Is Set To Make History
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, 15, is likely to be called up by Team India Cricket and make history as the youngest Indian cricket player at the international level after the legend Sachin Tendulkar was called to play in the 1980s.
Vaibhav, after his breath-taking performance in IPL 2026, where he scored 776 Runs with a Strike Rate of 237.30, is now seen as one of the fearless and talented Indian youngsters to watch out for.
Before being called to play for the senior Indian cricket team, Vaibhav is set to play for India A in a tournament in Sri Lanka, as part of a tri-nation series to be held in June with Afghanistan.
What’s To Come For Team India
India’s cricket schedule in June has them playing 2 T20 match series against Ireland in Belfast on the 26th and 28th. India will then play a 5-match T20 series in England from July 1st to 11th.
With a new possible captain and the influx of young talent, this will begin a new chapter in India’s T20 cricket history, with the focus on preparing for the year 2028 and the international T20 tournaments slated for that year.
